fifa world cup 1962 poster

The holders, Brazil qualified for the next phase without too much difficulty while Czechoslovakia finished as runners up. The Spanish team featured two players who had previously appeared for other countries in the World Cup, Ferenc Puskás (Hungary) and José Santamaría (Uruguay). FIFA later ruled that a player who has represented one country in a World Cup match cannot later play for another national team.

Brazil's win the previous day meant that Czechoslovakia were assured of the runners-up place. They looked set to win this game after Mašek scored in after 15 seconds. Mexico came back and took the lead in the 29th minute. In the second half it was all Czechoslovakia but in the final moments a Mexican counter-attack broke down in the Czech penalty area. After a lengthy delay, the referee awarded a penalty against Czechoslovakia for handball. Play was held up while photographers ran down the field to get into position to snap Hernández' spot kick. This was Mexico's first ever win in the World Cup finals.
