In an even contest played in stifling, humid conditions, neither team impressed. England defended for much of the game while France had the lion's share of possession.

A violent thunderstorm and torrential rain interrupted the match for almost an hour shortly after kick-off. Ukraine were disappointing and France always seemed in control. After two second half goals in rapid succession, the Ukraine team seemed to lose heart.

At times this was like watching a Premier League match: frantic, gutsy and exciting but lacking finesse. England were 1-0 up at half-time but conceded twice early in the second half exposing England;s weakness defending set-pieces. However, Theo Walcott, brought on immediately after Sweden took the lead, changed the dynamic of the game and scored with alooping shot that baffled the Swedish 'keeper. On 78 minutes, Walcott fired in a low cross slightly behind Welbeck in the six-yard area who spun his back to the goal and cleverly dragged the ball behind him and into the net.

England did just enough to secure victory and put Ukraine out of the tournament but it was a close-run thing. Rooney, returning to the side after suspension looked out of sorts but was on hand to nod home from all of 12 inches after Gerrard's cross evaded the erratic Pyatov. Ukraine should have had an equaliser when Terry hooked the ball out of England's goal and replays showed the ball had crossed the line, a fact missed by the extra official standing on the line just a few metres away.

A stunning goal by Ibrahimovic helped Sweden, who were already out of the competition, to an unlikely victory over a complacent French side. The result allowed England to avoid Spain in the quarter-finals.
