Northern Ireland

2010-2019

windsor park 2015Northern Ireland began the new decade 56th in FIFA's world rankings. The team continued to play home matches at Linfield's Windsor Park stadium. Proposals to build a new stadium on the site of the former Maze Prison or in the Sydenham area of East Belfast were rejected by the Irish FA in favour of a major redevelopment of Windsor Park although no concrete plans were intially on the table. In 2011 the Northern Ireland Executive allocated £138 million towards redeveloping football stadia throughout the province which included £28 million to rebuild Windsor Park. Planning permission was granted in February 2013 but work was delayed due to a legal challenge by Crusaders FC who alleged the funding amounted to state aid to Linfield FC, illegal under EU law. The case was settled in July and work was finally completed in 2015.

Northern Ireland launched their new home strip in June 2010, immediately after the team's summer tour, which saw them lose all their games, in Albania, Connecticut (against Turkey) and Chile. The new strip had none of the trimmings seen in recent years, recreating the iconic outfit worn by George Best and his team mates in the Sixties, but with the addition of shadow stripes.

Umbro introduced a rather fine looking away strip in May 2011 featuring a double-chevron. The choice of emerald green for the shorts did mean that the home and away shorts could now be switched when necessary so the team could appear in all-green or all-white.

In 2012 the IFA chose Adidas as their new technical sponsor, making much in the press announcements of the fact that Northern Ireland had played in two World Cups wearing Adidas outfits.

After yet another unsuccesful World Cup qualifying campaign, the Irish FA launched the new "home" strip in November 2013. Based on Adidas' new Condivo template, the combination of two shades of green attracted much favourable comment. The change strip was launched in a Belfast sports shop and revives memories of the 1982 World Cup campaign. This replaced the black strip introduced just 12 months previously (and worn four times) with a price tag of £52 for the shirt alone, prompting a wave of protest in social media.

The Irish FA now introduced a new strip every year. The new first strip returns to familiar emerald green while two shades of blue feature on the change strip.

2015 brought qualification for the expanded European Championship for the first time and once again a new strip was introduced. The inclusion of blue in the shirt met with widespread disapproval and a petition was raised to try to get the Irish FA to change their mind. The alternative is in exactly the same template but without the offending third colour. Although these were usually worn with the latest Adidas socks, the older style did appear against Latvia (November 2015 - the kit's first appearance) and Norway (March 2017).

There was no repeat of the controversy that followed the launch of their previous "home" strip when the new set was announced in November 2017. Traditional with the addition of Adidas' signature trim of the period, a neat flappy collar and subtle pinstripes created a very smart rig. The away strip was launched six months later, the latest version of Adidas' Condivo design in two shades of blue. The white shirts from 2017-18 were pressed in to service for the Nations League match against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Sarajevo.
