FIFA Women's World Cup 1995

2015 womens world cup logoFollowing the success of the 1991 tournament FIFA decided the competition should be rebranded as the Women's World Cup. The format remained unchanged but matches now lasted the full 90 minutes with one time-out allowed in each half. Three points would be awarded for a win.

Sweden was chosen to host the tournament which was played out in four cities with only the final hosted in the capital, Stockholm. The matches woud be played over three weeks in June involving a punishing schedule of train travel for all of the teams except Germany, who hired their own 'plane.

Qualification was through each confederation's championship competition aside from Oceania, where a separate threeway tournament was arranged.
